A native of Ottawa, Virginia pursued the study of the classical flute at conservatories in Quebec with Gail Grimstead-Michaud and in Paris with Raymond Guiot, piccolo with Jean-Louis Beaumadier, and chamber music with Claude Desurmont. After graduation, she moved to Germany, where she enjoyed a career as an orchestral and as a chamber musician as part of Duo Concertante with guitarist Matthias Jakob. She has held teaching positions in both state and private music schools in Germany as well as being the flute and recorder instructor at the State Teacher’s College.
Since returning to Canada, Virginia has built a thriving private studio in Kanata Lakes. Her creative, personalized, and effective teaching style has not only enriched the lives of many students but also played a significant role in their success. Some of her students have gone on to become professional performers and teachers, a testament to her influence and the inspiration she instills in her students.
Periods of study at the Tafelmusik Baroque Summer Institute, the Oberlin Baroque Performance Institute, and Amherst Early Music have enabled me to deepen my knowledge of baroque performance practice on the historical one-keyed flute and the baroque recorder.
